It’s student volunteering week!

This week, 19 – 25 February, is Student Volunteering Week, an annual event that celebrates the contribution of student volunteers and shows people interested in volunteering what they could gain by signing up.

Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Shropshire, Jackie Jeffrey says: “Volunteers are crucial and we simply couldn’t function without their time and dedication.

“Our student volunteers are a real asset to the service, and they get a lot out of working with us too.

“Volunteering can be a chance to pick up essential experience in teamwork, communication and project management, plus skills for specific careers, for example, in law or social policy.

“As well as boosting your CV, volunteering with Citizens Advice gives you the chance to help give back to your local community and make a real, positive impact on the lives of people who seek advice.”

Locally, 70 Citizens Advice Shropshire volunteers helped 7,481 people in 2016/17 with problems around benefits, debt, housing, employment and more.

Volunteers give face-to-face and telephone advice, as well researching policies and practices affecting people’s lives, and campaigning for change.

Our volunteers have a range of skills and experience and are of a range of ages and backgrounds. Dan is a Sixth Form student currently volunteering with us:

“As a Sixth Form student aspiring to study law at university, Citizens Advice seemed like the perfect opportunity to get experience of a working environment, as well as boosting my C.V. I am thoroughly enjoying my role in Research and Campaigns, as I have the chance to get to know my community better and try to help out. I have only been a volunteer for a few weeks, but have already settled down, working on a project with the help of the other kind, welcoming volunteers.”
